Good morning everyone, it’s my honor to stand here to make a speech. And I want to introduce something about Valentine’s Day to you.

It is known to us all, Valentine’s Day is on February 14th and it is a traditional festival in west, but now it is popular with all of us. As far as I know, most of you would like to celebrate the festival, but I want to tell you something in detail about it.

First of all, let me tell you the origin of the festival. In fact, there are many legends about the origination of the Valentine’s Day. As the result, people consider the day as the young life’s beginning and the day about love. Therefore, people try to imitate the behavior of the birds. Firstly, roses are good presents on Valentine’s Day. And different colors of the roses stand for different meanings. Pink roses mean that the person you send the present to be you first love. Red roses mean that you love the one you send present to be the one you love now. Orange roses mean that you say” You are beautiful.” to your lover. And the white roses mean you respect your lover. But we do know that February has long been a month of romance. St. Valentine‘s Day, as we know it today, contains vestiges of both Christian and ancient Roman tradition. So, who was Saint Valentine and how did he become associated with this ancient rite? Today, the Catholic Church recognizes at least three different saints named Valentine or Valentinus, all of whom were martyred.

One legend contends that Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. When emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, he outlawed marriage for young men -- his crop of potential soldiers. Valentine, realizing the injustice of the decree, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. When Valentine‘s actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death.
